Is VyprVPN Safe to Use

Google+ Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr +

VyprVPN positions itself as a trustworthy VPN on guard of your online confidentiality. Unfortunately, there are quite a few services that promise the same but just can’t live up to expectations. Therefore, I decided to find out if VyprVPN is safe enough to use. For this, I checked its privacy policy and security features.

In brief, the company provides some interesting security facilities. Here is what I appreciate about it:

  • Is registered outside the 5, 9 or 14 Eyes countries;
  • Strong encryption;
  • A trademark Chameleon technology;
  • Kill switch;
  • No IP/DNS Leak.

Unfortunately, some major drawbacks ruin the first positive impression. Here are disadvantages of VyprVPN:

  • Retains some connection logs;
  • Doesn’t have anonymous payment methods

VyprVPN’s Legislation and Logging Policy

You have probably heard of Golden Frog, a prominent fighter for Internet privacy and freedom on the web. This company is a VyprVPN’s parent. While Golden Frog operates from the USA, VyprVPN is registered in Switzerland. This neutral country respects people’s privacy and therefore it has a favorable legislation. VPNs also benefit from these privacy laws which make them safe from mandatory data retention or the state’s intervention.

It goes without saying that Switzerland does not participate in any spy treaties. This cannot be said about the United States, though. I am not aware of the subtleties of the legal relationship between Golden Frog and VyprVPN but I really hope the companies did their best to protect confidential user data against the encroachment by the US government.

Despite the big words about freedom and respect of privacy, VyprVPN secretly peeks at its users. The service doesn’t monitor traffic but it watches how clients use its network. The retained data help with troubleshooting, billing issues, and performance evaluation. For these purposes, VyprVPN logs how much bandwidth clients consumed, when they were active online and when they finished a VPN session, what servers they utilized, and most importantly, users’ IP addresses. This information is not as harmless as it may seem at first sight. If you do something the service is not ok with, the connection logs will help the provider to detect you and at best you will get off with an account suspension.

VyprVPN’s Security Features

First of all, I would like to say that VyprVPN together with its parent company actually owns and hosts their entire server park and a DNS database. Not only does it help to provide fantastic speeds but also it ensures an extra layer of security since there are no third parties able to seize user data.

A reliable encryption is on guard of your safety a well. OpenVPN paired with AES-256 cipher is one the best security facility available among VPNs to date. VyprVPN doesn’t stop at this and it offers a trademark Chameleon protocol developed on the basis of OpenVPN. This option allows you to use VPN with networks that technically forbid it. VyprVPN obfuscates your traffic so that it can pass through firewalls. Please note that Chameleon is not available with a Standard Subscription and it is not compatible with iOS devices.

Another great security feature is Block Malicious Sites which sifts out websites that may infect your device.

VyprVPN supplies a kill switch tool that protects your real IP from exposure if VPN connection interrupts. I found no IP, DNS or WebRTC leaks when using the service and this is great.

Unfortunately, the service doesn’t accept Bitcoin payments and it is a bit of disappointment for users paranoid about their anonymity.

The Best Secure Alternative to VyprVPN

VyprVPN does provide a lot of security features but its logging policy is too iffy. If you’re anxious about your privacy and want every aspect of a VPN to be perfect, you should say goodbye to VyprVPN. The service I recommend, NordVPN, is devoid of weaknesses characteristic of common-or-garden VPNs. It carries out a genuine zero-log policy meaning it doesn’t store a bit of your data. Its security features are up to the mark as well. In fact, it offers so many options that there is hardly any other service on a par with it. All in all, NordVPN is an ideal solution for every privacy-concerned user.

VyprVPN boldly declares online privacy, anonymity, and freedoms but it is not always able to keep these grand promises. Its logging policy leaves much to be desired and this is the biggest drawback I’ve spotted. On the other hand, it supplies an impressive set of security features such kill switch, chameleon protocol. However, I can’t call VyprVPN safe until it ceases to collect extensive connection logs.
