Is F-Secure Freedome VPN Safe?

Freedome VPN is a VPN service run by a Finland-based security firm known as F-Secure. The company has been working in the security industry from way back in 1988 when it was simply known as Data Fellows. With more than 20 offices spread across the world, from Helsinki to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, F-Secure has established itself as a trustworthy security brand.

As a VPN service, F-Secure Freedome is rather basic but very easy to use, lightweight, and works across different platforms. The VPN provider boasts of having 30 servers in 23 locations. It may not have an extensive range of servers as other popular VPNs do but this only means that they have decent speeds and unlimited bandwidth.

So, is F-Secure Freedome VPN safe for your Internet browsing? Let’s look at some of the VPN’s key features to determine if it is indeed a secure option.

F-Secure Freedome VPN Privacy Policy

F-Secure Freedome VPN has a well laid out website structure with all the information you need available in its FAQ, privacy policy, and terms of service pages. According to their privacy policy, the VPN provider does not keep logs on your IP address and browsing history.

However, they keep temporary 90-day logs of each VPN session duration as well as your device ID, amount of data used, and the public IP you connect from. The company claims to do this in order to protect itself against abuse. They even have a Track Mapper which, if enabled, logs tracking data to build a data usage map.

The VPN provider states that the feature is optional and that they delete the data they collect after 90 days. This means that F-Secure Freedome VPN is not completely a zero-log VPN but at least they are quite open about their practices.

F-Secure Jurisdiction

F-Secure VPN is based in Helsinki, Finland. In terms of privacy, Finland is a good location because the country is known for having the strictest privacy laws globally. Privacy is an important factor to consider in any VPN service you choose. If you want to mask your online activities you should be sufficiently protected from both Internet service providers and government agencies.

Fortunately, Finland is outside the jurisdiction of the 5 Eyes Alliance of countries that share intelligence information. The alliance includes the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Finland is a perfect location for a VPN because the country has strict privacy laws and cannot share personal data with other countries or agencies in the world.

Encryption and Security Protocols

F-Secure Freedome VPN uses state-of-the-art AES-256 encryption, which is a hack-proof encryption key believed to be the strongest option available today. The company also uses OpenVPN tunneling protocol as a default on all Windows, Android, macOS devices. For iOS devices, the VPN uses the IKEv2 protocol, which is just as efficient as the OpenVPN protocol.

DNS and IP Leak Protection

F-Secure is a company that focuses on security. Their VPN provides sufficient protection from DNS and IP leaks. DNS leaks are quite common in many VPNs especially the free ones and could easily lead to severe problems in countries like China that have unfriendly privacy practices.

Kill Switch

F-Secure’s Freedome VPN does indeed provide a kill switch to protect you when the VPN connection suddenly goes down leaving your real IP exposed.

Conclusion

F-Secure’s Freedome VPN is extremely easy to use but its not safe for your online privacy because of its logging policy and it has small number of servers as well as bad customer support. If you want a more versatile, secure, and Netflix friendly VPN option, you may need to consider some of the alternatives mentioned in this article.
